Somebody was. A neat, professional shadowing job, never coming up close enough for Callan to find out who it was.

Callan dropped Lonely off and went on to a pub for one slow, cautious whisky, making it last, till a girl came in to buy cigarettes, swirled round in a movement as arrogant as it was pleasing, and spilled what was left of it all over him.

She apologized prettily enough and bought him another, and took a campari for herself. Nice blonde hair that owed nothing to a bottle. Innocent blue eyes. And you can do a beautiful tailing job in a car darling, Callan thought. It’s a treat to have you following me.

He told her his name was Tucker and that he was a civil servant, and the girl somehow, contrived to convey that all her life she had wanted to meet a civil servant called Tucker.

“My name’s Lund,” she said. “Christina Lund. I’m from Berlin.” The part with the wall around it, thought Callan.

They talked a little longer. Then they both discovered they were hungry, and thought they might as well have a bite together since they had become such good friends so quickly. Over the meal she did a good job of pumping information from him too—about his job, and his friends, and the work he did. It was as well, thought Callan, that he’d been Mr Tucker for years.

She was as thorough as she was subtle. She even got it out of him that Mr Tucker and his colleague Mr Renfrew had been out distributing PY 83’s that very evening. Lonely in the Civil Service was a thought to conjure with, but Callan ignored it and told her instead about forms and schedules and in-trays and out-trays till the poor girl clenched her jaws to stop herself from yawning.

Tucker must be the most boring man in the world, thought Callan, and went on talking to the end. After the meal he offered her a lift, but her own car was quite near, and Callan walked to it with her, and told her about inter-office memos. The girl got into the car as if it were a lifeboat.
